Removing wisdom teeth can be beneficial for your oral and overall health.
Wisdom teeth, known also as third molars, are the very back teeth on either side of the upper and lower jaws. They are the last teeth to erupt and are usually noticed between the ages of 17 and 25 years.
Often fully erupted wisdom teeth can be removed simply and easily. However, if the wisdom teeth are impacted, it may require surgery. The term “impacted” wisdom teeth is used when they are entrapped completely within the soft tissue or the bone or only partially break through the gum
Simply put, there isn’t enough room for wisdom teeth because our jaws don’t grow to be big enough to have enough space for them to come in. Since there isn’t enough room for them to erupt properly, wisdom teeth tend to erupt at an angle. Or they don’t fully emerge, which causes problems for the rest of the mouth. The wisdom teeth routinely damage the teeth right next door, the second molars. Dentists recommend removing wisdom teeth before they become a problem and to avoid a more complicated surgery.
The reason we remove wisdom teeth is to prevent them from damaging other healthy teeth. When wisdom teeth erupt sideways, it throws off your bite, creates an area where food gets caught and decays surrounding teeth, and can cause painful infections. So, if you skip the surgery today, it’s likely to cause complications and issues down later.
Our dentist may recommend your wisdom teeth be extracted even before problems develop. This is to avoid a more painful or more complicated extraction that might have to be done a few years later. Removal is easier in young people, when the wisdom teeth roots are not yet fully developed and the bone is less dense. In older people, recovery and healing time tend to be longer. If you would like to know more, or to book an appointment, please contact us today.

Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are the last set of teeth to develop in the human mouth. They often emerge between the ages of 17 and 25 and can cause problems due to a lack of space in the jaw. Many people have their wisdom teeth removed to prevent complications such as pain, infections, or damage to other teeth.
Not everyone needs to get their wisdom teeth removed. The decision to remove wisdom teeth is based on various factors, including the individual’s oral health, the position of the teeth, and whether they are causing or are likely to cause problems.
If the wisdom teeth are properly aligned, fully erupted, and can be easily cleaned, they may not require removal. However, if the wisdom teeth are impacted (trapped beneath the gums or bone), causing pain, crowding other teeth, or leading to other dental issues, their removal is often recommended.
It is important to consult with a dentist or oral surgeon who can evaluate your specific situation and provide appropriate guidance. They will consider factors such as the size of your jaw, the condition of the wisdom teeth, and any potential risks or complications associated with leaving them in place.
“Impacted” wisdom teeth are teeth that do not have enough space to fully emerge or grow properly in the mouth. This can cause pain, infections, damage to neighbouring teeth, and other complications. In such cases, it is often recommended to have the impacted wisdom teeth removed.
